Omnisend is an email and SMS marketing platform built for e-commerce. Its data model centres on contacts, segments, tags, campaigns and automation workflows. The platform has deep Shopify integration, meaning much contact data flows in automatically from connected stores.

This guide covers CSV import, contact export, the Omnisend API and Coefficient for recurring exports to Google Sheets or Excel.

What data can you import and export from Omnisend?
Omnisend supports CSV import of contacts with tags, custom properties and phone numbers. Export covers contact lists with all properties and opt-in status as CSV, plus campaign reports as CSV. Automation workflows and email templates cannot be exported as data. The Omnisend API provides full programmatic access to contacts, campaigns, automation data and reporting. Coefficient connects Omnisend to Google Sheets or Excel for live, auto-refreshing marketing data exports.

How to import data into Omnisend

Method 1: CSV contact import

  1. In Omnisend, go to Audience > All Contacts and click Import Contacts.
  2. Upload your CSV file. Omnisend requires specific column headers — download the Omnisend import template for the correct structure.
  3. Map columns to Omnisend contact properties: Email or Phone (at least one required), First Name, Last Name, tags and custom properties.
  4. Set the contact status: subscribed, non-subscribed or unsubscribed.
  5. Click Import. Omnisend processes the file and emails a summary when complete.

Format requirements:

  • File type: CSV with UTF-8 encoding.
  • Required field: Email or Phone number. At least one is required.
  • Tags: include tags as a pipe-separated list in one column (tag1|tag2|tag3).
  • Consent status: set to “subscribed” only for contacts who have explicitly opted in. Setting non-opted contacts as subscribed violates anti-spam regulations.
  • Shopify contacts: if using the Shopify integration, contacts sync automatically. Use CSV import for contacts from external sources.
  • Cannot import: campaign history, automation enrollment, SMS opt-in history and e-commerce order data cannot be imported via CSV.

Method 2: Omnisend API

The Omnisend API supports programmatic contact creation, tag management and event tracking. Use it for automated contact sync from e-commerce platforms not natively supported by Omnisend, or for custom integration workflows.

How to export data from Omnisend

Method 1: Contact export (CSV)

  1. Go to Audience > All Contacts in Omnisend.
  2. Apply segment filters or select a specific list to narrow your contacts.
  3. Click Export or the download icon. Choose which fields to include.
  4. Omnisend emails a download link when the export is ready.

What the export includes:

  • Included: email, phone, first name, last name, all tags, all custom properties, subscriber status, opt-in date, country.
  • Not included: email engagement history (opens, clicks), campaign send history, automation enrollment data.

Method 2: Campaign report export

  1. Go to Campaigns in Omnisend and open a campaign.
  2. Click the menu and select Export Report.
  3. Download the CSV with campaign metrics: sent, delivered, opened, clicked, unsubscribed and revenue attribution.

Method 3: Coefficient for live, scheduled exports

Omnisend’s native exports are one-time CSV downloads. For marketing teams that need fresh contact counts, segment sizes or campaign performance data in a spreadsheet regularly, Coefficient automates this.

Coefficient connects Omnisend to Google Sheets or Excel. Marketing data refreshes automatically.

  • Import contact records, campaign metrics and segment data with field-level selection and audience filters.
  • Set auto-refresh so list health and campaign performance reports are always current.
  • Turn live Omnisend data into a shareable web dashboard. Coefficient AI dashboards build it in plain English.

How to connect Omnisend to a spreadsheet with Coefficient:

  • Install Coefficient from the Google Workspace Marketplace or Microsoft AppSource.
  • Open Coefficient from the Extensions menu in Google Sheets, or the add-in menu in Excel.
  • Click Import From and select Omnisend. When prompted, enter your Omnisend API key to complete the connection.
  • Select the data type (contacts, campaigns, segments), choose fields and apply filters.
  • Set a Scheduled Run to refresh data automatically.

Method 4: Omnisend API for programmatic export

The Omnisend API provides access to contact data, campaign statistics, automation reports and e-commerce event data in JSON format. Use it for full account backups, integrating Omnisend data with a BI tool or data warehouse, or building custom reporting on top of Omnisend data.
